Dems won because of Iraq?
Democrats keep putting forward the idea that the albatross of Iraq around Bush’s neck won them congress in 2006. But I don’t remember Democrats campaigning that hard on the war issue. I do remember them saying, after the election, that Iraq was the defining issue and that Democrats have a mandate to end the war by any means necessary. Thus they are ready to go to war against Bush just as they would have planned with or without an Iraq war.
The War in Iraq
So how do Americans feel about the most important issue? Just over half (51 percent) support the U.S. war in Iraq and 44 percent oppose it.
There is a 58-point gap between the level of support for the war among Republicans (84 percent) and Democrats (26 percent).
Some voters feel so strongly about Iraq that they are willing to vote for a candidate from the opposite party who shares their view over someone from their own party they disagree with on it.
Nearly half of Republicans (46 percent) say they would vote for a pro-war Democrat over an anti-war Republican. Among Democrats, 29 percent say they would vote for an anti-war Republican over a pro-war Democrat.
Voters are somewhat more inclined to think the United States will win the war in Iraq if Republicans are in control (34 percent) than if Democrats are (20 percent). Regardless of which party is in control, more Americans are pessimistic than optimistic about the chances of winning in Iraq. ~foxnews.com
But then we have exit polls and the somewhat dubious research of MoveOn.org declaring, “this election was a referendum on the Administration’s policy in Iraq.”
Several polls say that Iraq was the most important issue for voters. But this has been true since the war began. And it’s more true for Republicans, who support the war by higher percentages.
In the 2002 election the, “most important issues,” were virtually identical.

Investors Business Daily has a poll that lines up with historical polls of the American people on the war in Iraq and the war on terror that is 180 degrees from the Democratic position.
Both Investors Business Daily and The Virtuous Republic explain what this means politically and I agree with them wholeheartedly.
Investors Business Daily editorial:
War On Terror: The party of John Murtha shamelessly seeks to defund and defeat U.S. troops on the battlefield and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The Congress the terrorists wanted is doing their bidding. ~investors.com
The Virtuous Republic:
Investor’s Business Daily commissioned a poll recently and found that Americans want to run and abandon Iraq, right? Guess what, they must have sampled people outside of San Francisco because it seems ordinary Americans actually want to win in Iraq. ~thevirtuousrepublic.com
So what is the point of ‘defunding and defeating’ the troops in Iraq? Why are Democrats bent on forcing America to surrender in a manner reminiscent of Vietnam? Why does the left hate the idea of victory?
In short, it is the broken meme of liberalism that has suffered from a severe dysfunction. That dysfunction is anti-americanism. Anti-capitalism. Anti-westernism. Progressive values are anti-thetical to the history of individual freedom and capitalism that is embodied in the American way of life. Thus the left constantly attacks the materialism of our culture. And seeks to

More poll news. Americans want to win:
Some quotes from a formal press release:
- “The survey shows Americans want to win in Iraq, and that they understand Iraq is the central point in the war against terrorism and they can support a U.S. strategy aimed at achieving victory,†said Neil Newhouse, a partner in POS. “The idea of pulling back from Iraq is not where the majority of Americans are.â€
- “How Americans view the war does not line up with the partisan messages or actions coming out of Washington,†said Davis Lundy, president of The Moriah Group [the Chattanooga PR firm which commissioned the survey]. “There are still a majority of Americans out there who want to support the President and a focused effort to define and achieve victory.â€
- “The key group driving public opinion here are what we call the “nose-holdersâ€, said Newhouse. “They don’t believe we should have gone to war or should still be there, but they believe we should stay and do whatever it takes to restore order until the Iraqis can govern and provide security for their own country.â€
